How to wire the switch in the distribution box

To wire a switch in a distribution box, connect the incoming phase and neutral to the main switch, then route power through protective devices to branch switches, ensuring proper earth and neutral connections.Step-by-Step Wiring Process

1. Safety First Always turn off the main power supply before starting any wiring to prevent electric shock. Verify with a voltage tester that no live current is present. 2. Mount the Distribution Box Secure the distribution box to a wall at an accessible height, ensuring it is free from obstructions and moisture. 3. Identify Components

  • Main Switch (MCB or DP MCB): Controls overall power.
  • RCCB/RCD: Provides protection against earth leakage.
  • Branch MCBs or switches: Protect individual circuits.
  • Busbars/Neutral/Earth links: Distribute power safely to all circuits . 4. Connect Incoming Supply
  • Connect the phase (live) wire to the input terminal of the main switch.
  • Connect the neutral wire to the neutral link or input of the main switch if using a DP MCB .
  • Connect the earth wire to the earth link or metallic body of the box. 5. Wiring Through Protective Devices
  • From the output of the main switch, connect to the input of the RCCB.
  • For branch circuits:
    • Single-pole MCBs: Connect only the phase wire from RCCB output to the MCB input; neutral goes to the neutral link.
    • Double-pole MCBs: Connect both phase and neutral from RCCB output to the MCB input . 6. Connect the Loads
  • For each load, connect the phase wire to the output of the corresponding MCB.
  • Connect the neutral wire to the neutral link and the earth wire to the earth link . 7. Organize and Secure Wires
  • Use plastic ties to bind wires neatly, maintaining uniform spacing and avoiding kinks.
  • Ensure wiring direction: left side for incoming connections, right side for outgoing circuits . 8. Testing and Safety Inspection
  • After wiring, use a multimeter to check for continuity, correct voltage, and absence of short circuits.
  • Verify that all connections are tight and that no exposed wires are present.
  • Ensure the distribution box is not overloaded and all protective devices are rated appropriately for the load . Following these steps ensures that the switch and all circuits in the distribution box are wired safely and efficiently, providing reliable power distribution while minimizing the risk of electrical hazards.
