In an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) panel, protection relays monitor the health and availability of both the primary (utility) and alternate (generator or backup) power sources. They supervise voltage, frequency, phase sequence, and other critical parameters to determine when a transfer is permissible and safe . Relays also provide protection against abnormal conditions such as under/over-voltage, under/over-frequency, phase loss, reverse power, overload, earth faults, and generator-specific faults .

Integration and Coordination

Protection relays must be carefully coordinated with the ATS architecture, whether the panel uses mechanically interlocked contactors, motorized breakers, or ACB/MCCB-based transfer devices . Key considerations include:

  • Measurement range and inputs: CT/VT inputs must match the ATS operating scheme.
  • Auxiliary supply and output contacts: Must be compatible with the ATS control logic.
  • Coordination with upstream/downstream protection: Ensures selectivity and prevents nuisance tripping.
  • Thermal and short-circuit design: Relays must align with busbar ratings and withstand verified short-circuit levels . For high-capacity panels, such as ACB-based incomers up to 6300 A or MCCB-based sources from 160 A to 2500 A, relay settings are critical to maintain system reliability and safety .
Standards Compliance

Protection relays and ATS panels are typically designed to comply with international standards:

  • IEC 61439-1/2: Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies.
  • IEC 60255: Protection relay performance and testing.
  • IEC 60947-2: MCCBs and ACBs.
  • IEC 60947-6-1: Transfer switching equipment . Compliance ensures interoperability, safety, and predictable performance in industrial and commercial installations.
Operational Logic

The ATS control logic, often microprocessor-based, continuously monitors the primary and alternate sources. Upon detecting a failure or abnormal condition in the primary source, the ATS initiates a transfer to the backup source once it is stable and within voltage and frequency tolerances . Relays provide the necessary permissives and interlocks to prevent unsafe transfers and support unattended operation . When utility power is restored, the ATS can automatically or manually retransfer the load back to the primary source.
