Power-transmitting optical cable

Power transmission optical cables, including Power-over-Fiber (PoF) and Optical Ground Wire (OPGW), enable electrical power and data transmission using optical fibers, offering high safety, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and long-distance capabilities.Power-over-Fiber (PoF)

Power-over-Fiber is a technology that transmits optical power through fiber and converts it into electrical power at a remote location using a photovoltaic cell. A typical PoF system consists of:

  • Light sources: Usually laser diodes emitting in the 750–980 nm range for short distances, or longer wavelengths for reduced scattering over longer distances. LEDs are less suitable due to incoherent emission.
  • Optical fibers: Single-mode or multimode fibers guide the light efficiently to the receiver.
  • Photovoltaic converters: Semiconductor devices (e.g., GaAs, InP, or InGaAs) convert optical power into electrical power. PoF systems can transmit hundreds of milliwatts to several watts, with potential for higher power using large-core multimode fibers. The main advantages include complete electrical isolation, immunity to electromagnetic interference, intrinsic safety in explosive environments, and lightweight cables. Typical electrical-to-electrical conversion efficiency ranges from 20% to 30%, with some systems exceeding 40% depending on laser and photovoltaic efficiency. Safety measures are required to prevent laser hazards if fibers break during operation .
Optical Ground Wire (OPGW)

OPGW cables are used in high-voltage overhead power lines and combine grounding and communication functions. Key features include:

  • Structure: A tubular core containing one or more optical fibers, surrounded by layers of steel and aluminum for mechanical strength and grounding.
  • Functions: Provides lightning protection, bonds towers to earth ground, and enables high-speed data transmission for utility control, monitoring, or leased communication services.
  • Advantages: Optical fibers are insulators, immune to electrical noise and lightning induction, and allow long-distance, high-speed data transmission. OPGW cables are installed on top of pylons, offering high reliability and weather resistance, and are suitable for voltages above 110 kV .
