  • Circuit Breakers: Automatic switches that protect individual circuits. They trip when current exceeds safe levels, preventing damage to wiring and appliances .
  • RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Provides protection against electric shock and leakage currents. Typically rated at 30mA for domestic installations .
  • Bus Bars: Metal strips that distribute power to the breakers. Separate bars exist for neutral and ground connections .
  • Grounding Wire: Connects the system to the earth to safely divert stray electricity and prevent shocks .
How Circuits Work

Each circuit consists of a hot wire (carrying current to devices), a neutral wire (returning current to the panel), and a ground wire (safety path to earth), . Circuits can be:

  • Single-phase circuits: Common in homes for lighting and outlets, typically 110–120V in the USA or 230V in other countries .
  • 240V circuits: Used for large appliances like ovens, air conditioners, or electric furnaces, combining two hot wires to provide higher voltage . Power flows from the main breaker to the branch circuit breakers, then to outlets, lights, or appliances. If a fault occurs, the breaker trips, isolating the problem and maintaining safety .

  • Turning off the main power before working inside the panel .
  • Using GFCIs or surge protectors for sensitive circuits .
