Construction process of optical fiber cable erection

Optical fiber cable erection involves precise manufacturing of the fiber, careful planning, and systematic installation to ensure high-speed, reliable data transmission.Fiber Cable Manufacturing

The construction of an optical fiber cable begins with the fiber itself, which consists of a core, cladding, coating, strengthening fibers, and an outer jacket .

  • Core: Made of high-purity silica glass, the core carries light signals. Its diameter and purity determine signal quality and transmission distance .
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and reflects light back into it using total internal reflection, preventing signal loss .
  • Coating: A protective plastic layer hardened with UV light to prevent cracks and enhance flexibility .
  • Strength Members: Materials like Kevlar® or steel rods provide tensile strength and protect against stretching or crushing .
  • Outer Jacket: Made of PVC, LSZH, or polyurethane, it shields the fiber from environmental hazards such as moisture, fire, and mechanical damage . The fiber is manufactured by drawing a pre-form of ultra-pure glass through a furnace at over 2000°C, stretching it to a diameter of about 125 microns, and immediately applying protective coatings .
Planning and Site Preparation

Before installation, a site survey and project planning are essential . This includes:

  • Mapping the route, considering terrain, streets, and existing utilities.
  • Selecting cable types (single-mode or multi-mode) based on network requirements.
  • Securing permits and regulatory approvals.
  • Estimating costs and scheduling milestones.
Cable Installation

Optical fiber cables can be installed aerially or underground depending on the environment .

  • Aerial Installation: Cables are strung between utility poles using pulleys and tensioners, secured with clamps and spacers to maintain proper tension .
  • Underground Installation: Cables are laid in trenches or conduits. Advanced methods like micro-trenching allow narrow, shallow cuts in pavement for minimal disruption .
  • Trenching and Conduit: Trenches are excavated, conduits installed, and dense aggregate may be used to protect the cable . During installation, tension and bending radius guidelines are strictly followed to prevent damage to the fiber .
Splicing and Termination

Since cables are not continuous, splicing joins sections:

  • Fusion Splicing: Fuses two fibers for minimal signal loss.
  • Mechanical Splicing: Aligns fibers using a mechanical fixture. Network termination involves connecting the fiber to optical network units (ONUs) or optical line terminals (OLTs) using connectors like SC, LC, or FC, ensuring cleanliness to avoid signal degradation .
Testing and Documentation

After installation, the network is tested for signal quality, attenuation, and continuity. Comprehensive documentation of routes, splices, and terminations ensures future maintenance and troubleshooting .

Summary

The erection of optical fiber cables is a multi-step process combining precise fiber manufacturing, careful planning, and meticulous installation. Each stage—from core fabrication to splicing and testing—ensures the network delivers high-speed, reliable communication while maintaining durability and minimizing signal loss .
