Active Optical Cable

An Active Optical Cable (AOC) is a high‑speed fiber‑optic cable with integrated transceivers that convert electrical signals to optical signals and back, enabling long‑distance, high‑bandwidth data transmission—typically up to 100 m or more—using standards like SFP28, QSFP28, QSFP‑DD, HDMI 2.1, and USB4.What an AOC Is

An Active Optical Cable is a fully integrated assembly combining:

  • Multimode optical fiber for signal transmission.
  • Embedded optical transceivers (VCSEL lasers, photodiodes, CDR chips) inside each connector.
  • Standard electrical connectors such as SFP+, QSFP28, QSFP‑DD, HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB.

Unlike traditional setups requiring separate transceivers and fiber patch cords, AOCs are plug‑and‑play assemblies.

How AOCs Work

AOCs perform an Electrical → Optical → Electrical (E‑O‑E) conversion:

  1. Transmit side: Electrical signals drive a VCSEL laser.
  2. Fiber transmission: Light pulses travel through multimode fiber with low loss and zero EMI.
  3. Receive side: Photodiodes convert light back to electrical signals, which are reshaped and output.
Key Advantages
  • Longer reach: 30–100 m typical; far beyond copper DAC limits (
