The Coral Sea Cable System (CS2) is a 4,700 km submarine fiber optic cable linking Port Moresby, PNG, and Honiara, Solomon Islands, to Sydney, Australia. It provides a capacity of up to 40 Tbps using Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology and 100G repeaters, enabling faster, more reliable, and affordable internet connectivity for PNG and the Solomon Islands . Constructed by Vocus Communications and Alcatel Submarine Networks, CS2 was completed in late 2019 and has been instrumental in supporting economic and social development . Additionally, Australia is funding new undersea cables in PNG, built by Google under the Pukpuk Treaty. These projects aim to link northern and southern PNG, including the Bougainville autonomous region, enhancing the national digital backbone and regional connectivity . The investment, totaling over A$450 million, reflects a strategic partnership to improve digital infrastructure and regional stability .

Domestic Fiber Network

PNG DataCo operates over 12,000 km of fiber optic cables across the country, covering 44 districts via fiber and 23 districts via satellite, achieving a 70–80% district connectivity rate . The network includes three data centers, 51 satellite infrastructures, and five international Points of Presence (PoPs) in Australia, Guam, Hong Kong, and Indonesia, providing access to Tier 1 upstream internet services . This extensive domestic network has reduced latency, increased availability, and lowered costs for wholesale telecommunications and digital services. PNG DataCo is also expanding connectivity through carrier-neutral towers, aiming to build 500 towers over three years to fill gaps where commercial mobile operators cannot reach, further enhancing broadband access and adoption .
