How does an optical cable transmit light

An optical fiber consists of three main components: the core, cladding, and protective coating. The core is the innermost part where light travels and has a higher refractive index than the surrounding cladding. The outer protective layers provide mechanical strength and environmental protection without affecting light transmission .

Principle of Light Transmission

Optical fibers rely on total internal reflection. When light traveling in the core hits the boundary with the cladding at a shallow angle, it is completely reflected back into the core rather than refracted out. This allows light pulses to propagate through the fiber with very low attenuation. Light sources such as lasers or LEDs generate the signals, which are encoded with data and injected into the fiber .

Transmission Modes

There are two primary transmission modes:

  • Single-mode fibers: Allow only one light path, ideal for long-distance communication with minimal signal loss.
