Egypt is establishing major fiber-optic cable manufacturing and infrastructure projects to boost digital transformation, regional connectivity, and local production.Domestic Fiber-Optic Cable Manufacturing

Egypt has launched a large-scale initiative to produce fiber-optic cables locally through Benya Cables, a subsidiary of Benya Group. In partnership with the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) and Corning Incorporated, the project involves building the largest fiber-optic cable factory in Egypt, Africa, and the Arab region, located in the Suez Canal Economic Zone on a 40,000-square-meter site . The factory, with investments exceeding 1 billion Egyptian pounds, aims to meet domestic demand and export to the Middle East and Africa . The facility is expected to create up to 500 job opportunities initially, with production capacity projected to reach 60,000 km of cables by 2030 . The project aligns with Egypt's 2030 vision for digital transformation, supporting smart cities, advanced telecommunications infrastructure, and national development projects .

International Fiber-Optic Connectivity

Egypt is also expanding its international connectivity through undersea fiber-optic cables. A Hungarian company, 4iG, is constructing a 2,800-kilometer optical fiber cable linking Egypt with Europe, which will provide high-speed internet access to six million additional households in Egypt . This project enhances Egypt's role as a digital hub connecting Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

Egypt-China Collaboration

In addition, Egypt has signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Chinese companies to establish three fiber-optic cable factories and three outsourcing centers, creating 800 job opportunities in fields such as electronic circuit design, software development, and optical network R&D . The agreements also include a $300 million technology investment fund, data centers, and training programs for over 3,250 specialists, further strengthening Egypt's ICT infrastructure and regional export capabilities .
