Two parts of the fiber optic sensor

A fiber optic sensor consists of two main parts: the optical fiber system and the sensing element (or transducer), along with supporting components like a light source and detector.Core Components

1. Optical Fiber System The optical fiber serves as the medium for transmitting light. It can be either intrinsic, where the fiber itself acts as the sensing element, or extrinsic, where the fiber simply carries light to and from an external transducer. The fiber typically consists of a core and cladding with different refractive indices, allowing light to propagate through total internal reflection. Plastic fibers are flexible and cost-effective, while glass fibers can withstand high temperatures and are used in demanding environments (up to 350°C) . 2. Sensing Element (Transducer) The transducer modulates a property of the light—such as intensity, wavelength, phase, or polarization—based on the physical quantity being measured, like temperature, pressure, strain, or vibration. In intrinsic sensors, the modulation occurs directly within the fiber, while in extrinsic sensors, the modulation is performed by an external device, and the fiber only transmits the light signal .

Supporting Components
  • Light Source: Provides the initial optical signal that travels through the fiber.
  • Detector: Receives the modulated light and converts it into an electrical signal for analysis.
  • Optional Electronics: Signal processing units may be used to interpret changes in light characteristics and provide accurate measurements .
Summary

In essence, a fiber optic sensor is composed of the optical fiber system and the sensing element, supported by a light source and detector. The fiber either acts as the sensor itself (intrinsic) or transmits light to an external sensor (extrinsic), while the transducer converts the physical quantity into a measurable optical signal. This configuration allows fiber optic sensors to operate in remote, high-voltage, or harsh environments with high precision and immunity to electromagnetic interference .
