Disadvantages of Fiber Bragg Grating Temperature Sensors

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) temperature sensors are highly sensitive and precise but face challenges such as cost, complexity, fragility, and difficulty in separating temperature effects from strain.Key Disadvantages

Thermal Sensitivity and Cross-Sensitivity FBG sensors are inherently sensitive to both temperature and strain. This dual sensitivity makes it difficult to distinguish whether a wavelength shift is caused by temperature changes or mechanical strain, complicating accurate temperature measurement without additional compensation techniques . Complexity in Signal Demodulation The reflected wavelength from an FBG must be precisely measured using sophisticated optical interrogators or spectrometers. This demodulation process is technically complex and requires specialized equipment, increasing the operational difficulty . High Cost FBG temperature sensors are expensive to manufacture and maintain. The cost arises from the need for high-quality optical fibers, precise grating inscription, and advanced interrogation systems . Fragility and Mechanical Vulnerability Optical fibers used in FBG sensors are delicate and can be easily damaged by bending, impact, or environmental stress. This fragility can affect sensor stability and long-term reliability, especially in harsh or industrial environments . Limited Sensitivity and Measurement Range While FBGs can measure high temperatures (up to 800°C for silica fibers and 1600°C for sapphire fibers), their sensitivity to temperature changes is relatively low compared to other parameters like strain. This means larger temperature variations are needed to produce detectable wavelength shifts . Packaging and Installation Challenges Proper packaging is required to protect the FBG from environmental factors and mechanical stress. Inadequate packaging can lead to measurement errors or sensor failure, and designing robust packaging adds to the complexity and cost . Calibration and Maintenance Requirements Accurate temperature measurement with FBGs requires careful calibration and periodic maintenance to ensure reliability, which can be resource-intensive in large-scale or long-term monitoring applications . In summary, while FBG temperature sensors offer high precision, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and multiplexing capabilities, their high cost, fragility, complexity, and cross-sensitivity to strain are significant disadvantages that must be addressed in practical applications .
