How to splice fiber optic boxes

Splicing and assembling a fiber optic box involves preparing the fiber cables, performing either fusion or mechanical splicing, organizing fibers in splice trays, and securely closing the box for long-term stability.Step 1: Prepare the Fiber Cables
  • Strip the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable to expose the loose tubes, removing any shielding or armor as needed. Leave sufficient cable length (typically 1–3 meters) for handling and splicing .
  • Clean and abrade the exposed fibers and strength members using a cleaning solution and sandpaper to ensure a smooth surface for sealing and splicing .
  • Fix the cable strength member to the designated column inside the box and secure it with a cable gland or fixing part to provide strain relief .
Step 2: Perform Fiber Splicing
  • Choose the splicing method:
    • Fusion splicing: Uses a fusion splicer to weld fiber ends together, providing very low insertion loss (~0.1 dB) and high reliability .
    • Mechanical splicing: Aligns fibers using a mechanical device and index-matching gel, suitable for quick or temporary connections with slightly higher loss (~0.3 dB), .
  • Insert spliced fibers into splice trays: Protect the splices with fiber sleeves and coil any excess fiber neatly within the tray to prevent stress or bending .
Step 3: Organize and Stack Splice Trays
  • Place the splice trays inside the fiber optic box, stacking them according to the box's capacity. Secure trays together if necessary, ensuring easy access for future maintenance .
  • Route fibers systematically using guides and holders to prevent tangling and maintain proper bend radius, which is critical for signal integrity .
Step 4: Connect Pigtails and Adapters
  • Pass spliced pigtails to the upper side of the tray and connect them to adapters or drop cables.
  • Perform light testing or fiber measurements to verify signal quality before final closure .
Step 5: Close and Secure the Box
  • Ensure strain relief by securing cables with fixing ribs or clamps.
  • Close the box lid securely, making sure all trays and fibers are protected from dust, moisture, and mechanical stress .
Best Practices
  • Keep all tools and splicing equipment clean to avoid contamination.
  • Maintain proper bend radius for all fibers to prevent signal loss.
  • Label fibers and trays for easy identification during maintenance.
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines for sealing rings, tape, and grounding if applicable . By following these steps, you can achieve a reliable, low-loss fiber optic connection with organized cable management and long-term stability.
