Single-mode fiber has a small core diameter of about 8–10 microns, allowing only a single light mode to propagate. This design minimizes signal dispersion, enabling data transmission over long distances with high bandwidth and minimal signal loss. Single-mode fibers are commonly used in telecommunications, long-haul networks, and large data centers. They operate at wavelengths around 1310 nm and 1550 nm, with OS1 and OS2 types supporting distances from 10 km up to 40 km at speeds up to 10 Gbps . Single-mode cables are typically yellow in industry color coding .

Multimode Fiber (MMF)

Multimode fiber has a larger core diameter, usually 50 or 62.5 microns, which allows multiple light modes to travel simultaneously. This makes multimode fiber suitable for shorter distances, such as local area networks (LANs) and intra-data-center links, where cost efficiency is important. Due to modal dispersion, multimode fibers have a shorter maximum transmission distance compared to single-mode fibers. They are compatible with LED or VCSEL light sources and are color-coded as orange, aqua, or lime green, depending on the OM (Optical Multimode) grade, such as OM1, OM3, OM4, or OM5 . Multimode fibers are ideal for high-capacity, short-range communication.
