Wavelength Division Multiplexing OTN Equipment

WDM technology enables multiple optical signals to be transmitted over a single fiber, and when integrated with OTN equipment, it provides efficient, high-capacity, and manageable optical networks.Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)

WDM is a fiber-optic technology that multiplexes multiple optical signals of different wavelengths onto a single fiber, allowing each wavelength to carry a separate service signal. This significantly increases fiber capacity and enables bidirectional communication over a single strand of fiber. WDM systems are categorized into:

  • Coarse WDM (CWDM): Uses wider wavelength spacing (typically 20 nm), supporting fewer channels but with simpler, cost-effective transceivers .
  • Dense WDM (DWDM): Uses narrow wavelength spacing (less than 0.8 nm), supporting dozens to over a hundred channels, ideal for high-capacity, long-haul transmission . DWDM systems often operate in the C-band (1530–1565 nm) and can extend to the L-band (1565–1625 nm) with advanced amplification techniques, enabling ultra-dense channel deployment .
Optical Transport Network (OTN)

OTN, defined by ITU-T G.709, is a network framework that enhances WDM systems by adding features similar to SONET/SDH, including:

  • Multiplexing and grooming: Aggregates multiple client signals into high-capacity wavelengths.
  • Routing and switching: Supports both optical-layer and electrical-layer grooming.
  • Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM): Provides monitoring, management, and protection of optical channels.
  • Protection schemes: Ensures network resilience against fiber cuts or equipment failures . OTN equipment, sometimes referred to as Wavelength Switched Optical Network (WSON) devices, integrates WDM with hierarchical transport, enabling transparent and efficient service delivery across metro, campus, and long-haul networks .
OTN Equipment Examples
  • Huawei OptiX OSN 1800: A multi-service OTN platform supporting TDM, packet, and OTN services. It delivers high-bandwidth services (2 Mbit/s to 100 Gbit/s) over metro or campus networks, with 200G per channel and 16T per fiber. The platform integrates CWDM and DWDM, provides low-latency video transmission, industrial automation support, and comprehensive network protection .
  • Muxponders and Multiplexers/Demultiplexers: Combine multiple low-capacity services into a single high-capacity wavelength and separate them at the receiving end, optimizing fiber utilization .
Applications

OTN with WDM is widely used for:

  • Data center interconnection (DCI)
  • Cross-regional backbone networks
  • High-speed enterprise and metro networks
  • Video, storage, and industrial automation services By combining WDM with OTN, operators achieve efficient bandwidth utilization, flexible service management, and robust network protection, making it a cornerstone of modern optical networks .
