Multimode and Single-mode Fiber

Single mode fiber is optimized for long-distance, high-speed transmission with a narrow core, while multimode fiber is suited for short-distance, high-capacity connections with a larger core.Core Differences

Single mode fiber (SMF) has a very narrow core, typically 8–10 microns, allowing only one light mode to propagate. This minimizes signal loss and modal dispersion, making it ideal for long-distance communication such as telecom backbones, data center interconnects, and wide-area networks . Single mode fibers often use lasers as the light source and are more expensive due to precise manufacturing requirements . Multimode fiber (MMF) has a larger core, usually 50 or 62.5 microns, which allows multiple light modes to travel simultaneously. This makes it suitable for short-distance, high-bandwidth applications like intra-building networks and data centers . Multimode fibers typically use LEDs or VCSELs as light sources and are easier and cheaper to manufacture .

Performance and Distance
  • Single mode fiber supports longer distances (up to tens of kilometers) with minimal signal degradation due to low modal dispersion .
  • Multimode fiber is limited to shorter distances (hundreds of meters to a few kilometers) because multiple light paths can interfere, causing modal dispersion and signal distortion .
Types and Bandwidth

Multimode fiber comes in several types:

  • OM1: 62.5µm core, suitable for 100 Mbps–1 Gbps Ethernet
  • OM2: 50µm core, supports 100 Mbps–10 Gbps
  • OM3/OM4: Laser-optimized, supports 10–100 Gbps
  • OM5: Wideband multimode, supports 40–400 Gbps Single mode fiber is categorized as OS1 (indoor) and OS2 (outdoor), with OS2 supporting longer distances and higher bandwidth .
Applications

Single mode fiber is used for:

  • Telecom and service provider backbones
  • Data center interconnects
  • Enterprise WANs and campus networks
  • Municipal and metropolitan networks
  • Critical infrastructure requiring low latency and high signal integrity Multimode fiber is used for:
  • Short-range data center connections
  • Intra-building networks
  • High-density environments where cost and ease of installation are priorities
Cost Considerations

Single mode fiber and its transceivers are generally more expensive than multimode due to precision manufacturing and laser requirements . Multimode fiber is cost-effective for short distances and high-capacity links, making it popular in enterprise and data center environments .

Summary

Choosing between single mode and multimode fiber depends on distance, bandwidth, cost, and application. Single mode is best for long-haul, high-speed, and critical networks, while multimode is ideal for short-range, high-density, and cost-sensitive deployments .
