To optimize your fiber broadband, switch your hub to Full Fibre mode, connect the ONT to your router via the WAN port, and adjust router settings for speed and reliability.Switching Your Hub to Full Fibre Mode

If you have a Smart Hub 2 or similar device, you need to enable Full Fibre mode to use your fiber connection effectively. Connect your Openreach modem to the WAN or Port 4 on the hub using a Cat5E or higher Ethernet cable. Use the admin password on the hub sticker; if it fails, perform a factory reset and re-enter the password. Once connected, the hub will update and display the Full Fibre toggle, dedicating Port 4 for fiber use .

Connecting the ONT to Your Router

The Optical Network Terminal (ONT) converts fiber optic signals into data your devices can use. Connect the fiber cable from the wall outlet to the ONT, then use an Ethernet cable to link the ONT's LAN port to your router's WAN port. Power on both devices and wait for the status lights to stabilize, indicating a successful connection .

Optimizing Router Settings

To maximize speed and stability on fiber broadband:

  • Placement: Position the router high, central, and in the open to reduce interference .
  • Frequency Bands: Assign 5 GHz for work/gaming devices and 2.4 GHz for IoT or older devices.
  • Channels: Use quieter channels (DFS if supported) to reduce congestion.
  • Quality of Service (QoS): Prioritize real-time traffic like video calls or gaming over background updates.
  • Guest Network: Create a separate SSID for visitors and smart devices to keep your main network fast.
  • Firmware & Security: Update firmware, change admin passwords, and enforce WPA2/WPA3 encryption .
Additional Tips
  • Ensure the ONT and router are near a power source and close to each other for optimal performance .
  • Use high-quality Ethernet cables (Cat5E or higher) to support gigabit speeds.
  • Regularly check for firmware updates and monitor network performance to maintain reliability. Following these steps ensures your fiber broadband is configured correctly, providing high-speed, low-latency, and reliable connectivity for all your devices.
