Transportation Process of Communication Optical Cables

Optical fiber communication transmits data by converting electrical signals into light pulses, guiding them through fibers via total internal reflection, and reconverting them back into electrical signals at the receiver.Signal Conversion and Transmission

Data begins as an electrical signal, which is converted into light pulses by a transmitter using a laser diode or LED. Laser diodes are preferred for high-speed, long-distance communication due to their coherent, focused light, while LEDs are used for shorter distances or less demanding applications. The data is encoded onto the light through modulation, typically by turning the light on and off to represent digital '1's and '0's .

Fiber Structure and Light Propagation

An optical fiber consists of a core surrounded by cladding, with the core having a slightly higher refractive index. This difference enables total internal reflection, which confines light within the core and allows it to travel long distances without escaping . The fiber is protected by a sheath and strengthening layers to ensure durability and flexibility .

Transmission Modes

Optical fibers are categorized into single-mode and multi-mode fibers. Single-mode fibers have a narrow core (~8–9 µm) allowing only one light path, minimizing dispersion and supporting long-distance, high-bandwidth communication. Multi-mode fibers have a larger core (50–62.5 µm), supporting multiple light paths, suitable for shorter distances like local networks or data centers . Graded-index multi-mode fibers reduce pulse spreading by gradually changing the refractive index from the center outward .

Signal Reception

At the receiving end, a photodetector converts the light pulses back into electrical signals. The signal may be amplified and decoded depending on whether the output is digital or analog. For long-distance transmissions, repeaters or optical amplifiers are used to restore signal strength and maintain data integrity .

Applications and Advantages

Optical fiber communication is widely used for internet backbones, submarine cables, metropolitan networks, and high-speed data centers. It offers high bandwidth, low attenuation, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and safe operation in high-voltage or flammable environments. Advanced techniques like wavelength-division multiplexing and space-division multiplexing further increase capacity without laying new cables . In summary, the transportation process in optical cables involves electrical-to-optical conversion, guided light propagation via total internal reflection, and optical-to-electrical reconversion, enabling fast, reliable, and long-distance communication.
