Modulation Principle of Fiber Optic Sensors

Optical fibers can be used as sensors to measure strain, temperature, pressure and other quantities by modifying a fiber so that the quantity to be measured modulates the intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength or transit time of light in the fiber. Radiation absorption excites an orbital electron to a higher energy level. Heating the material enables the trapped states to interact with phonons and decay into lower-energy. Optical fiber sensors (OFSs) have emerged as essential tools in the monitoring of physical, chemical, and bio-medical parameters in harsh situations due to their high sensitivity, electromagnetic interference (EMI) immunity, and long-term stability. Figure 2: Types of Fiber Optic Sensors Fiber Optic Sensors can be categorized based on their construction and operating principles: 1. birth of fiber optic sensors. Due to its small size, low cost and ease of fabrication leading it to replace traditional sensors which were used frequently before th birth of fiber optic sensors. Further there are many points why fiber optic sensors are used in place of traditional size and. A fiber-optic sensor is a sensor that uses optical fiber either as the sensing element ("intrinsic sensors"), or as a means of relaying signals from a remote sensor to the electronics that process the signals ("extrinsic sensors").
