COETZER OPTICALFIBER NETWORK SYSTEMS Technical Inquiry

Inside the optical module of the switch

Optical modules are hot-pluggable transceivers that convert electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa, enabling high-speed data transmission through fiber optics in network switches.Function and Working Principle

Optical modules act as photoelectric converters at the physical layer of the OSI model, converting electrical signals from the switch into optical signals for transmission over fiber, and converting incoming optical signals back into electrical signals for the switch to process . They typically consist of:

  • Optical transmitter (laser diode or LED)
  • Optical receiver (photodetector)
  • Driver and preamplifier circuits
  • Optical bores for transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) signals
  • Protective shell and latch mechanisms for secure installation .
Types of Optical Modules

Optical modules vary in form factor, speed, and supported distance:

  • SFP (1G), SFP+ (10G), SFP28 (25G): Compact, hot-pluggable modules for short to medium distances .
  • OSFP and XPO modules: High-bandwidth modules designed for AI and data center fabrics, supporting up to 12.8Tbps per module with advanced cooling and high-density deployment .
  • Bidirectional SFPs: Use a single fiber for both transmit and receive, requiring paired modules .
  • Modules may support DR, FR, LR, SR, and ZR optical architectures for different distances and network configurations .
Installation and Hot-Pluggability

Optical modules are hot-pluggable, meaning they can be inserted or removed without powering off the switch . Installation steps include:

  1. Grounding to prevent ESD damage.
  2. Handling the module by its sides, avoiding contact with connectors.
  3. Inserting the module into the switch port until it clicks.
  4. Connecting or disconnecting fiber cables carefully to avoid laser exposure .
Performance Monitoring

Modern optical modules often include Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM/DOM), allowing the switch to read module information such as temperature, supply voltage, and transmit/receive optical power . Key performance counters include average transmit power, which reflects the optical signal strength and can indicate module health .

Compatibility and Standards

Optical modules conform to Multi-Source Agreements (MSAs) and electrical interface standards like CEI to ensure interoperability across devices . However, full compatibility depends on the host switch's PHY, firmware, and the link standard in use.

Summary

Optical modules are essential components inside switches, enabling flexible, high-speed, and scalable fiber-optic connectivity. They support a range of speeds and distances, are hot-pluggable for easy maintenance, and provide diagnostic capabilities to monitor network performance. Advanced modules like XPO are designed for next-generation AI data centers, offering extreme bandwidth and density while maintaining field pluggability .
