How to connect cables to communication towers

Installing cables on communication towers requires careful planning, proper routing, secure fastening, grounding, and strict adherence to safety protocols.

Planning and Documentation

Before installation, create a detailed layout of cable routes, including cable types, lengths, and connection points. Label each cable clearly for identification and future maintenance. Documenting specifications and installation dates ensures easier troubleshooting and compliance with industry standards .

Cable Handling and Hoisting
  • Prepare the cable on the ground: uncoil or place the cable reel on an axle to allow smooth rotation .
  • Attach hoisting grips along the cable at intervals based on its length and tensile strength. Tie the grips to a rope capable of supporting the cable's weight. Hoist the cable to the top of the tower carefully .
  • Avoid sharp bends or twists during hoisting to prevent damage .
Securing and Routing
  • Use cable ties, clamps, and brackets to secure cables along the tower structure. Ensure fasteners are snug but not overly tight to avoid crushing the cable .
  • Maintain proper separation between power and data cables to reduce interference. Use cable trays or conduits where possible .
  • For towers over 100 feet, bond cables to the tower at intervals not exceeding 75 feet .
Grounding and Bonding
  • Bond all coaxial cables, waveguides, and antennas to the tower near the antenna base and at the tower base before routing toward equipment shelters .
  • Use a grounding bus bar near the tower base and connect cable grounds to it. The bus bar should be bonded to the tower ground using appropriate copper wire (#2 AWG minimum) .
  • Install multiple grounding electrodes (minimum three) spaced at least 6 feet apart, connected via a ground ring buried below the frost line .
Safety Measures
  • Conduct a risk assessment before climbing, considering weather, tower condition, and potential hazards .
  • Use certified safety equipment such as harnesses, lanyards, and helmets, and ensure all personnel are trained in working at height .
  • Maintain clear communication between ground personnel and climbers, especially during hoisting or emergency situations .
Cable Labeling and Maintenance
  • Label both ends of each cable with durable, weather-resistant tags including cable type, destination, and installation date .
  • Regularly inspect fasteners, clamps, and cable integrity to prevent sagging, wear, or damage .
