How to connect a small fiber optic splice box

Connecting a small fiber optic splice box involves preparing the fiber, securing it in the box, performing splicing, and organizing the fibers within splice trays for optimal performance.Step 1: Prepare the Fiber Cable

Begin by removing the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable, along with any shielding or armor, to expose the loose tubes. Leave a sufficient length (around 3 meters) for handling and splicing. Clean the fibers and strength members using a suitable cleaning solution, and abrade the outer jacket for about 150 mm to ensure proper sealing and adhesion of sealing materials .

Step 2: Install the Cable in the Splice Box

Select sealing rings that match the cable diameter and place them on the cable. Insert the cable into the designated entry port of the splice box. If the cable has a shield, connect and ground it. Wrap self-adhesive sealing tape between the sealing rings to create a secure, moisture-resistant seal. Use a hose clamp or similar fastener to secure the cable to the base of the splice box .

Step 3: Splice the Fibers

Choose a splicing method based on your requirements:

  • Fusion Splicing: Uses an electric arc to permanently join fibers, providing very low signal loss (around 0.1 dB) and high reliability. Place the fibers in the splicer's V-grooves, align them precisely, and fuse them using the splicer .
  • Mechanical Splicing: Uses an alignment device and index-matching gel to hold fibers together. This method is faster and allows temporary connections but typically has higher signal loss (around 0.3 dB), . After splicing, insert the splices into the splice tray, coiling any excess fiber neatly to prevent bending or stress.
Step 4: Organize and Close the Splice Box

Stack the splice trays according to the box's capacity, ensuring easy access for maintenance. Place the lid over the trays and lock it securely. Verify that all fibers are properly managed, with no sharp bends, and that the box is sealed against environmental factors .

Step 5: Test and Maintain

After installation, perform optical testing to ensure low insertion loss and minimal back reflection. Regularly inspect the splice box for moisture, dust, or mechanical stress to maintain long-term network performance . By following these steps, your small-sized fiber optic splice box will be securely connected, with organized fibers and reliable splices, ensuring optimal signal quality and durability.
