Two optical switches connected in series

When two optical switches are connected in series, the circuit only conducts when both switches are activated, forming a logical AND configuration.Series Connection Principle

Connecting two switches in series means that the current flows through the first switch and then through the second switch before reaching the load or next stage of the circuit. In this configuration:

  • Current is the same through both switches.
  • Voltage divides across the switches depending on their internal resistance or load characteristics.
  • If either switch is open (inactive), the circuit is broken and no current flows, effectively turning off the load or signal . This behavior is equivalent to a logical AND gate, where the output is active only if both inputs (switches) are active .
Application to Optical Switches

Optical switches, such as phototransistor optocouplers, operate by converting light signals into electrical current. When connecting two optical switches in series:

  • The collector-emitter path of the first phototransistor is connected in series with the collector-emitter path of the second phototransistor.
  • The load or next circuit stage is connected after the second switch.
  • The circuit only conducts when both phototransistors are illuminated (activated by their respective light sources), ensuring that both conditions are met before the output is triggered . This setup is commonly used in safety interlocks, sequential control, or logic circuits, where multiple conditions must be satisfied simultaneously.
Practical Considerations
  1. Voltage and Current Ratings: Ensure the series connection does not exceed the maximum voltage or current ratings of the optical switches.
  2. Current Transfer Ratio (CTR): The effective current through the series path depends on the CTR of each optocoupler. Low CTR devices may require additional amplification to drive the load.
  3. Isolation: Series-connected optical switches maintain galvanic isolation between control signals and the load, which is useful in sensitive or high-voltage applications.
  4. Response Time: The overall switching speed may be affected by the slower of the two phototransistors, so timing considerations are important in high-speed circuits.
Example

If two phototransistor optocouplers are used to control a relay:

  • Switch 1 is activated by Light A.
  • Switch 2 is activated by Light B.
  • The relay only energizes when both Light A and Light B are present, ensuring a coordinated or safety-dependent operation. This series configuration is simple yet effective for multi-condition control in both analog and digital circuits .
