Cold splicing method for optical fiber cables

Cold splicing joins two optical fibers using a mechanical connector without fusion, providing a quick, cost-effective, and reversible connection.Overview of Cold Splicing

Cold splicing, also called mechanical splicing, uses a connector to align and hold two fiber ends together precisely, allowing light to pass with minimal loss. Unlike fusion splicing, it does not require heat or welding, making it faster and suitable for field installations, temporary connections, or FTTH deployments . The main components include a ferrule to hold the fiber and a body that secures the ferrule and maintains alignment .

Tools and Materials Needed
  • Cold splice connector (with ferrule and body)
  • Fiber stripper
  • Fiber cleaver or cutting knife
  • Alcohol wipes or cotton
  • Optional: optical power meter or OTDR for testing
Step-by-Step Procedure
  1. Prepare the Connector: Install the cold connector by snapping the rings on both sides and securing the middle slot .
  2. Strip the Fiber: Remove about 3 cm of the fiber coating from each end to expose the bare fiber. Clean the exposed fiber with alcohol to remove debris .
  3. Cut the Fiber: Use a cleaver or cutting knife to cut approximately 1.4 cm of the stripped fiber to ensure a clean, flat end .
  4. Insert the First Fiber: Place one fiber end into the cold connector, ensuring it is seated in the ferrule and aligned properly.
  5. Prepare the Second Fiber: Strip and clean the second fiber end similarly, then cut it to the correct length.
  6. Insert the Second Fiber: Place the second fiber into the opposite side of the connector, ensuring both fibers meet in the middle and are held securely by the snap rings .
  7. Secure and Test: Push the snap rings tightly to lock the fibers in place. Test the connection using an optical power meter or OTDR to verify low insertion loss and proper alignment .
Advantages of Cold Splicing
  • No special equipment like fusion splicers is required .
  • Quick and convenient, ideal for field installations or temporary connections .
  • Reversible: fibers can be disconnected if needed.
  • Cost-effective for short runs or FTTH applications.
Considerations
  • Cold splices typically have slightly higher insertion loss (around 0.3 dB) compared to fusion splices (around 0.1 dB), .
  • Proper cleaning and precise alignment are critical to minimize signal loss.
  • Best suited for short-distance or temporary connections; for permanent, long-haul, or high-performance networks, fusion splicing is preferred. By following these steps and best practices, cold splicing can provide a reliable, fast, and cost-efficient method to join optical fibers in the field .
